The Decline of Leprosy in the Republic of Korea

Abstract
Leprosy ; as of end of 1991, there are 1469 registered patients in Korea affording to
the operational definition of the disease WHO.
Prevalence rate is 0.29 per 10,000 and 150 new cases of leprosy were reported for the
year. Statistics of prevalence and incidence rate in recent years show the trends of
decline of the disease in Korea.
All the patients are being effectively treated with Multi Drug Therapy as of 100%
coverage. Leprosy patients and healed cases or so-called ex-patients, about 23thousands
in total, have been cared for with relevant rehabilitative medical services accordingly.
Social welfare for those persons with leprosy and those who have had leprosy is an
essential component of the disease prevention and control. Currently 98 settlement for
them are supported by the government cooperated with non governmental organizations.
Here I will show you several simplifided data for your understanding of trends and
situation of Korean Leprosy.
